Hi all,
I returned from 12 days in Hawaii last night and thought it would be good to give an update on our ongoing dynamical systems project. Overall, I think my greatest progress over the past couple of weeks has been to become very familiar with the basic ideas and terminology around dynamical systems and the associated physics/mathematics. Feeling a bit confident. :-)
Status
- Continuing to read and enjoy Chaos and Time-Series Analysis, J.C. Sprott. Pavan's book has traveled half-way around the world, so I ordered my own copy. Sliding asymptotically into Lyapunov with much help from Wolfram's Mathematica to help visualize islands of stability. I'm feeling like I'm rounding third base and will see much progress now that I'm back in Phoenix and re-focused.
- Purchased Multiscale Analysis of Complex Time Series: Integration of Chaos and Random Fractal Theory, and Beyond, J. Gao et. al.
- Enrolled and making progress in Complexity Explorer online class (Santa Fe Institute). https://www.complexityexplorer.org/courses/61-introduction-to-dynamical-systems-and-chaos-summer-2016 This is probably the best online class I've ever taken. Very fundamental at this point, but it's helping me to really understand some of the terminology.
Goals for Week of July 18 (starting now)
- Complete a summary of research goals/skills, per Xin Wei's request this morning, for publication on revised Synthesis web site.
- Clear, concise 1-page summary of Lyapunov, what it does and how it can be used.
- Simple example of Lyapunov application, preferably using iStage or other experiential method.
Important housekeeping note
I've been a bit too ambitious with Slack and now I have 2 separate Slack channels for dynamical systems. Sorry! I would like to remove the channel on AMEDC called #dynamical-models, copy all of those postings over to the channel on Synthesis-asu called #dynamical-systems.
Please let me know if you have any other suggestions. I'll plan to remove the AMEDC channel next Monday, unless you have other ideas. I apologize for any confusion.
I will continue to update the posthaven site: http://dynamical-systems.posthaven.com/ You can post notes to this site by sending an email to post@dynamical-systems.posthaven.com. I will make sure this site is up-to-date with the latest information.
Back to work!
Regards,
Brenda
